Root: bituka
Usage Notes:
There are two popular Filipino idiomatic expressions that use the word "bituka".
1. "Malayò sa bituka" (lit: far from the intestine) is said to someone who is deemed as over- or disproportionately reacting to pain. Often used by parents on their children.
"Tahan na. Kagát lang 'yan ng lamók. Malayo 'yan sa bituka" = Stop crying already. That's only a mosquito bite. It's nothing serious.
2. "Mahápdî na ang bituka" (lit: intestine is already painful) is used to express hunger. "Mahápdî" is a stinging or burning kind of pain, like when alcohol is put on a wound.
"Kailán ba tayo kakain? Mahápdî na ang bituka namin" = When are we going to eat? We're quite hungry already.
You might also hear of "chícharón bituka". These are intestine cracklings, usually from pork, and a popular finger food in beer-drinking sessions. "Pulutan" is the general term for all types of finger food taken during such sessions. I believe the term was derived from "pulot" (pick up).
