Root: halo
Usage Notes:
Many Filipinos find a solution to hot weather in "hálo-halo" (also spelled as háluhalo), which often serves as an afternoon snack when the temperature is at its highest point. Filipinos, in general, have a sweet tooth that's why this cold dessert is very popular.
"Halo" as a verb means "to mix" that's why the common translation of the dessert in English is "mix-mix". "Halo" may also be a noun meaning "an ingredient in a mixture". I would say that the more accurate translation of "hálo-halo" would be "a mixture of various ingredients", but that's a wordy translation to use.
It may be available all year round in Filipino restaurants, but during the dry season, sidewalk stalls selling them sprout in ordinary residential communities. In the community where I live, for example, I am sure to find at least one within a 50 meter radius from my house. In restaurant menus, it is commonly listed as "hálo-halo regular" and "hálo-halo special". The difference is normally with the "special" having a scoop of ice cream on top.
Hálo-halo Special:
The "hálo-halo" is a Filipino cultural icon, so if you're visiting the Philippines, you may want to include it in your list of things to try.
