The Filipino language is very much centered around roots. By adding affixes (prefixes, suffixes, infixes) to roots you can create complex words and meanings. Roots can also sometimes (although not always) be stand alone as words by themselves.

The list below includes the most common roots in the language. These roots alone are combined with prefixes, suffixes, and infixes to create literally thousands of words in standard usage, and learning these roots will give you a head start in learning these words.

Caution about stressing root syllables: When using these ROOT flash cards be careful not to stress any particular syllable within the root. Roots themselves do not have a stressed syllable. The stressed syllable within a word or its root can change based on the definition and which affixes are used.
