I am engaged to marry a beautiful woman in Baliuag. I also plan to retire there.
My fiance' teaches me a word here and there and she shows me so much love and dedication. I think it would be a nice gift to her if I learn her language. My goal is to be able to speak my vows to her in Tagalog and then be able to maintain conversations with her family after our ceremony.
We hope to get married in January, if the pandemic will subside.
For those of you unfamiliar with the problems Americans may have learning Tagalog, I have identified some issues when they speak to me in English. 1) Gender seems of little importance in speaking while here gender is very important. It took a while for my mind to accept "She loves her husband" could be speaking about a man loving his spouse. 2) Tense (past, present, future) seems of little concern and can be confusing when it is incorrect, and 3) Action words are sometimes misdirecting. For example; my fiance' was "worried to me" can easily get confused with "I am going to work" which meant I was already there in the mind of my fiance'.

@elysiarigel The way you are learning is the "normal" way most people learn a new language. The other (and much more scary) is "total immersion" in which you put yourself in a situation where you must learn the language to survive.

@Mariz That is a very interesting concept to learn more of one language by studying a different language. Do you already know fluent English or Tagalog or both?
