BANGKOK Things to Do for First Timers (ENGLISH) • Travel Guide PART 2 • The Poor Traveler Thailand
00:42.7
If you missed Part 1, or you'd rather watch the Tagalog version of this video, just search
00:49.2
In this video, we'll be enumerating some of the best things to do and places to visit
00:53.6
in and around Bangkok.
00:54.6
Yes, we're including destinations that are outside the Thai capital but are easily
00:59.0
accessible from there.
01:01.2
Before we begin, take a moment to subscribe to this channel if you haven't yet, and
01:05.9

01:18.0
Many of Bangkok's key attractions are located within walking distance of each other.
01:21.9
For example, the Grand Palace and the city's great temples are all easily accessible
01:25.8
from the Chao Phraya River and can be conveniently visited in one day.
01:30.5
Before you leave your hotel, though, make sure you're appropriately dressed because
01:33.9
you'll be visiting temples which implement a strict dress code.
01:38.0
No shorts, short skirts, miniskirts, tight-fitting trousers, torn trousers, no sandals, vests,
01:45.8
sleeveless shirts, see-through shirts, or sandals—none of them are allowed.
01:51.2
If your hotel or point of origin is close to a BTS or MRT station, you can simply take
01:55.8
the train to Sapan Taksin Station.
01:58.8
Take Exit 2 and walk to the Saturn Central Pier, buy a ticket, and board either the
02:02.9
tourist boat with 50 baht fare or the orange flag boat and pay 15 baht to Tachang Pier.
02:09.3
From here, travel on foot to the Grand Palace Complex.
02:12.7
Go straight to the main entrance and don't entertain anyone who will tell you that it's
02:16.9
close for an event or whatever.
02:20.2
Just go straight to the gates and enter.
02:22.6
Upon entry, a guard will check if you're adequately dressed.
02:26.1
If not, enter the building to your right to buy a pair of pants.
02:29.2
They used to rent these out to tourists, but perhaps because of the pandemic, they only
02:33.9
sell these items now for 200 baht apiece.
02:37.3
The Grand Palace ticket costs 500 baht, which also includes access to the Temple of the
02:42.0
Emerald Buddha, a few other museums, and a traditional Thai dance show.
02:47.3
Within the complex, you'll find numerous pavilions, courtyards, and other structures,
02:51.6
but the centerpiece is the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, which houses the most revered
02:55.6
image of Buddha in Thailand.
02:58.3
And oh by the way, video cameras, selfie sticks, drones, tripods, and microphones are prohibited
03:03.9
within the temple's complex.
03:06.0
Taking videos is not allowed either, which is why we only took photos.
03:10.4
A 10-minute walk southward will lead you to Wat Pho, best known for the largest collection
03:14.7
of Buddha images in Thailand, including the enormous 46-meter reclining Buddha that
03:20.3
it shelters in the main ordination hall.
03:23.7
Outside are numerous ornate chedis or stupas.
03:27.2
Entrance fee is 200 baht, which includes a bottle of water that you can claim from
03:30.8
the automated machines inside using your ticket.
03:34.3
Note that there is a dress code, and the rule is to have your shoulders, knees, and heels
03:39.9
After Wat Pho, walk a bit towards the river and find this spot, where you can buy a boat
03:44.1
ticket to the other side.
03:45.8
The fare is 5 baht.
03:48.1
What's on the other side, you ask?
03:50.1
Well, Wat Arun, probably the most recognizable landmark in Bangkok with a 70-meter tall
03:56.2
spire or prang, which is intricately decorated all over.
04:01.0
After getting off the boat, just follow the crowd to the main gate, where you can purchase
04:06.3
A ticket costs 100 baht each, inclusive of bottled water.
04:11.3
Known to locals as Wat Chiang or Temple of Dawn, it is believed that King Thaksin,
04:15.6
after escaping Ayutthaya, which was attacked by the Burmese, reached the place just before
04:21.4
He then made the place the chief temple and once housed the precious Emerald Buddha and
04:25.6
the Prabang, which is another important image, and was eventually moved to the Lao city of
04:32.1
By the way, if you notice, we're putting information about each attraction on the side
04:37.7
But these details might change in the future, so please double-check with authorities first
04:41.4
before your trip so you could plan right.
04:48.2
Aside from its ornate spires and temples, Bangkok is also best known for its floating markets.
04:53.2
But the truth is, these boat-navigated markets are actually located outside the capital.
04:58.8
Two of the most accessible are the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market in Ratchaburi province
05:04.2
and the Amphawa Floating Market in Samut Songkram.
05:07.8
Each has its own charms and specialties to offer visitors.
05:11.4
Exploring these entails boarding a small boat as you negotiate the market canals.
05:15.9
Plenty of souvenir and food options too.
05:19.0
Another market that has been attracting throngs of tourists is the Meklong Railway Market.
05:23.6
Yes, railway, because it's set up along the train tracks.
05:27.4
And when a train chugs along, watch and be amazed by how the vendors make way for it.
05:32.2
You can also spend an hour chilling at a railway cafe or take photos of or with a train
05:36.9
at the train station.
05:39.3
Kluk has tours that combine Meklong Railway Market with either Damnoen or Amphawa Market.
05:44.3
There are several departure times available, so choose the most convenient for you.
05:48.5
We'll put the link in the description or in the pinned comment.
05:57.8
At 314 meters tall, King Power Mahanakhon is one of Thailand's tallest buildings,
06:03.1
housing a hotel, residential units, and tourist attractions.
06:06.7
From the outside, it looks like a pixelated skyscraper,
06:09.7
a design that easily captivates.
06:11.9
Inside, a multimedia elevator will take you to the highest outdoor observation deck in the country,
06:16.9
allowing a magnificent view of Bangkok and surrounding areas.
06:20.6
But most visitors are here for the so-called Skywalk.
06:24.7
Well, atop the building is an area with a glass floor that you may walk on.
06:29.6
Yes, glass, creating a nerve-wracking but pretty mind-blowing experience.
06:34.8
You need to wear the shoe covers provided on-site before you're allowed to step on it,
06:38.9
and mobile phones and other loose items are not allowed within the glass tray area.
06:43.2
This means that you won't be able to take a selfie while on the glass.
06:46.6
If you're after photos, best to visit with a companion.
06:49.8
If you're traveling alone, make friends with other solo visitors
06:53.0
and just take photos of each other.
06:55.2
Only a limited number of tickets are sold per day, so it's best to book in advance.
06:59.3
And you can reserve online via Kluk.
07:01.6
You can also check out other Mahanakon Experience Package options
07:04.8
and choose the one that suits your preferences.
07:11.8
No Bangkok trip is complete without getting a taste of its famous or infamous nightlife.
07:17.4
In our previous video, we already mentioned Khaosan Road, the backpacker mecca.
07:21.9
It is crowded, loud, and wild.
07:24.6
Thunderous music from nightclubs and the delicious smell of street food fill the air,
07:28.6
while tourists fill every vacant seat, table, and corner.
07:32.6
Aside from Khaosan, Bangkok has several other nightlife districts.
07:36.8
Most clubs and bars are safe, but as in any major city, not all.
07:42.2
Scams targeting tourists do exist at some establishments.
07:45.9
You've probably heard about tourists entering a bar
07:48.1
and then not being allowed to leave without paying a hefty price
07:50.6
for a ridiculously overpriced drink.
07:53.4
If you want to try Bangkok nightlife and make sure you're in good hands,
07:56.6
you may join a guided tour.
07:58.5
Klook has two main options, a bar hopping tour, more like a pub crawl,
08:03.0
and a hangover tour where you get to visit the bars
08:06.0
featured in the Hangover 2 movie, including a ping pong show.
08:10.4
Again, we'll put the link to these pages in the description of this video
08:14.4
or in the pinned comment.
08:16.2
As for me, I chose to join the pub crawl organized by the hostel I stayed at,
08:21.9
The tour started at the in-house bar and then made our way on foot
08:25.3
to Khaosan Road to Bar Hop.
08:27.4
I paid Php 490 baht, inclusive of a drink.
08:35.2
Aside from nightlife and partying,
08:37.2
Bangkok is also known worldwide as a fabulous shopping destination
08:41.6
thanks to diverse markets and super low prices.
08:45.0
Here, you'll find bargain centers, fashion halls,
08:47.8
shopping malls, and weekend markets,
08:50.1
all incredibly popular among locals and tourists alike.
08:53.7
But perhaps my favorite area is Pratunam in Ratchatui District.
08:57.7
It is one of the biggest wholesale garment markets in the country
09:01.2
with both indoor and outdoor shopping areas
09:04.2
selling all sorts of products from clothes to toiletries to medicine.
09:09.0
It's also home to two giant shopping malls bursting to the seams with retail shops.
09:14.1
Fashionistas will have a field day at Platinum Fashion Mall,
09:17.1
housing a multi-level garment labyrinth composed of over 2,500 stores.
09:22.6
Items sold here are pretty diverse.
09:25.0
The first three floors are for women's fashion,
09:27.5
although you could still find menswear shops every dozen of stalls or so.
09:31.2
But most men's stores are on the fourth floor and kids on the fifth.
09:35.0
The other massive mall in the Pratunam neighborhood
09:37.5
is the Palladium World Shopping Mall or simply Palladium,
09:41.0
which sells mostly tech stuff like gadgets,
09:43.7
electronics, phone accessories, cameras, and the like.
09:47.4
But you'll also find other products like apparel, suitcases, and jewelry.
09:52.6
Most of the stores cater to both wholesalers and retail customers,
09:56.3
so don't be shy if you're buying just one or two pieces.
09:59.7
That said, you'll probably get great discounts if you buy more.
10:03.4
What my friends and I did was to buy as a group so we could avail of the promos.
10:11.9
Another sprawling shopper's paradise is the Chatuchak Market,
10:15.3
which has been operating since 1942.
10:18.3
Composed of over 15,000 stalls,
10:21.4
it is said to be the world's largest and most diverse weekend market.
10:25.6
It is also the busiest market in Thailand.
10:28.9
What's in store for you here?
10:30.6
You'll find a full gamut of products imaginable grouped into 30 sections.
10:35.1
Clothes, of course. Lots of them.
10:37.6
And books, antiques, accessories, art pieces, flowers, souvenirs,
10:42.8
and home décors among others.
10:45.1
So to make the most of your time,
10:47.0
take a photo of this map at the entrance and let it guide you while you shop.
10:51.1
Note that there are three different entrance gates.
10:53.7
If you get hungry, and you will,
10:55.9
you won't miss the food stalls clustered near entrance 1.
10:59.1
You'll also find food kiosks inside like Muyang Meso Manta,
11:03.0
serving mouth-watering and succulent muyang or grilled pork at 60 baht per 100 grams.
11:08.6
You can find it on Google Maps as Roasted Honey Glazed Pork Meso Manta.
11:13.0
Now that we're on the topic of food,
11:20.3
I don't know about you, but for me,
11:22.1
Thailand has one of the most delicious cuisines in the world.
11:26.0
Definitely in my top 3 favorite countries when it comes to food.
11:29.6
So I don't leave Bangkok without digging into local favorites.
11:33.4
We already published a separate video describing in detail
11:36.4
our most loved food places in the city,
11:38.6
but here's a quick rundown of the eaters that I tried
11:41.1
that have Michelin Bib Gourmand recognition.
11:43.9
First up, Tip Samay, where we had the best pad thai of our lives.
11:47.8
It's said to be the first store to serve the now ubiquitous noodle dish.
11:51.2
It uses thinner rice noodles coated in shrimp oil.
11:54.6
Don't miss Jeo Chula or Jeo for the best affordable tom yum noodle soup.
11:59.5
It's crazy popular that queuing can take up to 2 hours unless you arrive early.
12:05.5
But the wait is worth it.
12:08.0
Its Tom Yum Mama can feed 2 to 4 persons and it's sinfully good,
12:13.0
especially the crispy pork belly toppings.
12:15.6
And also order their salmon salad.
12:18.3
Warning though, these are spicy spicy dishes.
12:21.9
So let them know beforehand if you can't handle it.
12:25.0
Just tell them you want it mild.
12:27.4
Olong Fried Chicken is another Michelin-recognized eatery
12:30.6
located across Lumpini Park in Silom area.
12:33.6
It started out as a humble street stall
12:35.4
but grew to become a proper eatery serving only a few Thai favorites.
12:40.4
We ordered a lot here and nothing disappointed.
12:43.3
But prioritize its fried chicken and papaya salad with salted egg and dried shrimp.
12:48.5
In Pratunam area, try Kuang Heng Chicken Rice and Go Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice.
12:53.8
Only the latter has the Michelin citation,
12:56.0
but we kind of enjoyed the former better.
12:58.2
But they both serve tender and delicious Hainanese chicken.
13:01.6
Kuang Heng also takes pride in its pork satay and fried chicken.
13:06.1
Alright, I'll stop here because all this Thai food talk
13:09.0
is making me want to book another flight to Bangkok.
13:11.8
We haven't even discussed the theme parks, Muay Thai, and other shrines and temples.
13:16.2
We also haven't tackled day trip destinations like Ayutthaya and Pattaya.
13:20.5
Don't worry, we'll cover all that in another video.
13:23.2
So if you don't want to miss that, you know what to do.
