Thousands of cyclists from 65 countries including the Philippines recently hit the streets of New York City for Bike New York's TD5 Borough Bike Tour.
00:11.1
The TD5 Borough Bike Tour is the first of its kind in the United States.
00:15.8
It's a 40-mile cycling event that started in downtown Manhattan, then through the streets of the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, and into a climb of the Verrazano Bridge to get to the finish line on Staten Island.
00:27.9
This event draws many Filipinos and Filipino-Americans every year for different reasons.
00:35.6
We caught up with the Silverios, a Phil-Am family who bikes together at one of the rest stops of the tour.
00:42.7
They took on the TD5 Borough Bike Tour challenge for the first time.
00:47.0
My family has always loved biking and so this is our first time and it seemed like a lot of fun.
00:52.9
So overall, better cardio, easier lifestyle.
00:57.9
Just easier to get around.
00:59.5
Definitely to keep in shape. I'm getting older, you know, we gotta do this.
01:03.8
I've done this with my wife, my oldest daughter. This is my youngest boy. This is his first time out so it's nice to get out.
01:11.1
Just for the experience, for fun.
01:14.2
John Salaveria, also a first-time participant in the cycling event, started off the tour with his friends but was separated from them as they got closer to the finish line.
01:24.5
My friends are also from the Verrazano Bridge still.
01:27.9
It feels great, yeah. Feels good. Even though the weather was a little rainy, you know, couldn't stop us from finishing this race.
01:37.5
It was really good, yeah. Really enjoyed it.
01:40.2
Salaveria picked up cycling as a hobby in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Has embraced it since then.
01:47.3
I cycle to, you know, stay active, really enjoy the city and really see it for what it is.
01:57.9
After the pandemic, it gave me like a chance to, you know, find a new hobby and that for me was cycling.
02:04.9
And I've just been cycling for maybe about four years now and it's been really good.
02:09.2
In joining Bike New York, these Filipinos are advocating for an active and healthy lifestyle through cycling in the busy streets of the Big Apple.
02:18.0
Start with a small ride. It could be like two miles, three miles and then you work your way up until you can do this bike tour.
02:25.2
So start small and maybe find a friend to do it with.
02:27.9
And yeah, like make sure you're having fun.
