The discussion of the Philippines and Indonesia's possible transfer of Filipina death row convict Mary Jane Veloso to the country is a welcome development, according to her legal counsel. Atty. Edre Olalia said this was a "unique and novel" situation since Indonesia imposed a death penalty on Veloso but if her transfer pushes through, she might be able to serve her sentece through life imprisonment in the country as the Philippines has abolished the death penalty in 2006. This, of course, boils down to the definite results of the discussion of both countries since, according to Olalia, Indonesia stands by its death penalty conviction and wants the Philippines to "respect" it.
