Nica del Rosario on teaming up with BINI and creating P-pop hits | ABS-CBN News
00:41.1
Tapos, ayan, so medyo parang danceable na house yung genre and everything.
00:51.4
Tapos, meron naman talaga kami history ni Bojam na mag-produce siya ng dance beat.
00:56.6
Tapos yung lyrics ko medyo either may hugot or malungkot or bittersweet or serious topics.
01:05.6
Pero hindi ko naman siya sinadya.
01:08.0
More of parang, I think yung mindset ko at that time was I was dealing with my anxiety
01:16.2
and how parang feeling ko.
01:18.4
I think everyone naman nakakaroon na once in a while na yung feeling ko na pag-iwanan na ako
01:22.9
or feeling ko parang wala akong masyadong naka-accomplish at this time.
01:27.0
Or parang minsan naisip ko rin what if ito na yung wala na akong magawa after,
01:33.0
wala na akong ma-accomplish after what I accomplished.
01:35.7
So stuff like that.
01:37.3
I guess yung lyrics that came out parang naging message ko rin siya to myself na parang
01:44.7
yun nga parang we all have our own, we set our own pace.
01:50.3
And kung ano man yung dinictate ng society na dapat.
01:54.4
Kasi may diba mayroong mga lists na like dapat by the age of 25 ganito ka na,
02:00.5
Dapat before 30 ganito ka na.
02:02.2
And I think at this day and age parang hindi na siya productive or
02:09.9
nakakatool helpful to people lalo na with what happened during the pandemic and everything.
02:15.0
Parang the message that I want to put forward is yun nga it doesn't,
02:20.6
it's never too late to start over, it's never too late to start new things.
02:24.6
Or if madecide mo na you wanna take a break and everything,
02:29.1
ikaw lang magdidictate kung ano nung gusto mong mangyare in your life.
02:33.8
And nobody can tell you if it's right or wrong.
02:36.4
So ayun, yun yung lumabas na lyrics.
02:42.7
Tapos yun, ito yung song na pinitch namin to Beanie.
02:47.5
And si Bojam was saying na yun nga, nagustuhan niya yung lyrics is parang
02:52.2
when he first heard my demo, yun din yung unan yung isip.
02:56.0
Tungkol sa anxiety to and he found it amusing.
02:59.4
So yun, dun nagstart yung song.
03:05.8
Okay, after naman po yung buo ng lyrics,
03:10.2
kamusta naman po yung pag-pitch nyo with Beanie?
03:12.6
And ano po yung naging reaction nila when they first read yung song?
03:19.2
And ito yung kakantahin nila about siya sa mental health,
03:23.4
sa anxiety, and sa career nila as a group member?
03:29.8
Wala kasi ako nung pinitch yung song.
03:33.1
The pitching was between Star Music and sila Bojam and the rest of Flip Music.
03:43.5
Tapos confidential yung...
03:45.1
Okay lang po, okay lang po.
03:47.0
So hindi ko rin masyad.
03:48.1
So parang nakikiano lang ako, nakinukulit ko lang sila.
03:51.4
Alin yung nagustuhan nila? Alin yung nagustuhan nila?
03:53.5
Because they weren't allowed to show.
03:55.3
Pero sabi nila, sabi nila nila Bojam, parang,
04:00.4
hindi, nagustuhan nila yung karera.
04:02.2
Yun, sure yung karera.
04:03.3
And wala rin kasi akong recording kasi kinasal yung sister-in-law ko.
04:09.0
Pero I think the girls really appreciated the message of, yun nga,
04:15.6
prioritizing self-love and mental health.
04:18.4
And from what we've seen upon release, I think a lot of young people,
04:23.5
I mean, I love that Binnie was the one who was able to interpret this song.
04:28.5
Kasi they're very young, very talented people.
04:31.6
And I'm pretty sure na parang they would also experience the pressures of
04:36.8
accomplishing things.
04:38.2
And kailangan makisabay sila kung ano yung sabihin ng society, yung pressures nun.
04:47.0
Staying nyo po, ano po yung importance na even yung mga P-pop groups,
04:51.4
they discuss these kinds of issues sa mga songs nila?
04:58.1
I think it's very important that they, kasi I think with K-pop, they do this already.
05:03.9
Parang I think with BTS, they like writing about depression and anxiety.
05:08.8
And I like that P-pop is following this trend kasi they really do have a very,
05:14.9
very wide audience of young people.
05:17.4
And I mean, young people go through a lot of pressure and especially young people in school.
05:27.1
And I mean, Karera hasn't been out for a long time yet.
05:32.7
Pero I've been seeing messages and tweets na about how ang daming nakaka-relate na
05:39.8
students na irig, students na delayed, students who have to repeat.
05:44.3
So, I think it's amazing that P-pop groups have the opportunity
05:52.2
to spread positive messages like this to their young audiences
05:58.9
and that they're taking this opportunity.
06:02.0
Actually po, parang na-observe ko maski sa music video na parang meron din pong pinapakita
06:07.7
dun yung every struggle ng bawat member ng BIN sa life nila.
06:12.9
And ask ko lang din po, kasi po you've done a lot of other songs with BIN.
06:22.2
Ano yung satingin ngayon parang nagsiset apart dito sa Karera?
06:28.6
Apart from your other songs with them?
06:32.5
I guess the message of it talaga is yun nga, it's a message that's really close to my heart
06:37.9
having suffered from anxiety for a really long time.
06:42.0
Kasi with Nanana and Huwag Muna Tayong Umuwi, the writing process for me talaga is
06:48.5
it's young love and it's kilig na may konting kirot and stuff like that.
06:54.8
They're a very young group and I'm not that young anymore.
06:59.5
So, parang yun yung lagi kong iniisip when I wrote the two songs na parang
07:04.8
what is something that young people can relate to.
07:07.1
And lagi ko naiisip it's young love and yun nga and developing feelings for the first time,
07:14.6
developing feelings for your friend, mga ganon.
07:17.2
Pero with Karera, what I answered dun sa question that I asked myself which is what do young people
07:26.3
can relate to, it's not just young love and romance anymore and puppy love.
07:32.1
It's also yun nga mental health struggles and the pressures of growing up.
07:43.0
I think that's what sets it apart from the first two songs that I wrote for them.
07:48.6
Last na lang po before we end.
07:51.7
Bakit ko sa tingin importante mag-usapan yung mental health even in music?
07:57.2
Personally, I think kasi for the longest time lalo na in our country,
08:01.8
talking about mental health has been taboo kasi parang naging source of shame siya especially
08:09.7
before as in with older generations.
08:13.4
I see it as a process that's continuously improving.
08:17.6
Like for example, one of my first therapists when I was in line waiting for my appointment,
08:26.2
ang dami kong nakikita in the waiting area na older people.
08:32.0
So, I think with the younger and the future generations being more open about mental health
08:38.5
and the importance of addressing mental health issues, parang it's not just paving the way for
08:44.9
the future but it's also showing older generations na it's okay to talk about these
08:52.6
things and to address these things.
08:54.2
And unti-unting na na-abolish yung taboo, yung derogatory terms and yung stigma of being
09:04.4
baliw or may topak or ganoon na parang mga baliw lang pumupunta sa therapist, mga baliw
09:11.0
lang kailangan ng psychologist.
09:12.2
Because like what I've always believed is everybody kind of needs a little bit of therapy
09:18.2
kasi yun nga, we live in a harsh world and life can be hard talaga and when we talk about
09:30.8
mental health in something as universal as music, I think it brings a sense of comfort
09:35.7
to everyone na yun nga, whatever they're going through, they're not alone and they
09:40.0
shouldn't be ashamed or afraid to talk about it or address it or even share it man lang
09:46.2
to people they trust and care about.
09:51.8
Sorry, okay lang po I take the opportunity to talk about na na na and huwag muna tayo
10:02.2
Yung both po, pwedeng niyo po bang mashare sa amin kung paano po yung naging process
10:06.3
into writing na na na and yung huwag muna tayo umuwi.
10:09.7
And I can observe din po na parang sa mga different eras ng BINI, parang nandun po
10:16.6
So pwedeng niyo po umuwi.
10:21.0
I've worked na kasi talaga with Starr Music before pa and Flip Music and Starr Music I've
10:27.3
always had a close working connection talaga.
10:30.0
So when we tried to pitch for BINI and BGYO, they were very open to asking about parang
10:39.5
meron ba kayong old songs there na naka-bank and one of those was na na na.
10:43.7
I actually wrote na na na with Bojam very early in my career.
10:49.3
Siguro I think I was 24 or 25 ganon.
10:55.9
It's one of the first songs I wrote with Flip Music.
10:59.2
And yun nga, it was just one of those songs na parang binaan ko lang.
11:03.0
And yun nga, it was fairly straightforward.
11:07.3
Parang it's about yung love and nag-wordplay lang ako with the whole night na ano.
11:15.4
Tapos it was fun.
11:19.8
We knew that it was a good song.
11:22.2
Sabi ko lang, I feel like may parang meron akong gut thing na parang it will have its
11:26.5
time and I was so happy na pinitch namin yun to BINI and they liked it.
11:32.9
I've actually, I think we've pitched it to other artists before pero hindi siya natatanggap.
11:37.3
So meron kaming running joke ni Bojam kasi yun nga, we have a bunch of songs na we composed
11:41.8
together na we would pitch to artists.
11:44.2
Tapos lagi hindi siya nakukuha.
11:45.5
Tapos parang nagjo-joke kami na yun, your time will come.
11:48.6
Tapos pag finally nakuha na siya, we'd be so happy.
11:52.2
So yun, that was mostly the story of Nanana.
11:56.6
We didn't actually expect na magiging dance kresya and everything because we were just
12:00.4
so happy na we got the chance to work with BINI.
12:05.8
Tapos yung wag muna tayong umuwi, that one we really composed for BINI.
12:11.0
As in, we were told the deadline for pitching and Bojam created a bunch of instrumentals
12:19.6
and beats for me and the other writers sa FIP Music.
12:23.3
And yung funny kasi wag muna tayong umuwi, muntik na siya hindi mangyari because I forgot
12:28.3
about the deadline.
12:30.2
Like the day before the deadline, nag-message siya Bojam na parang, ano, natapos mo na?
12:34.3
And sabi ko, yung ano?
12:35.9
Tapos nagpanik rin siya, nagpanik ako.
12:38.8
Tapos so I sabi ko, hindi, kaya ko ito gawin, kaya ito ako gawin.
12:42.2
Because I didn't wanna let him down.
12:43.7
And I know he was really excited about that beat in particular because he worked really
12:49.0
As in, yun nga, may rain effects sa start.
12:51.5
As in, he was so passionate talking to me about his beat na parang ito yung peg ko,
12:57.3
ito yung na-imagine ko na parang yun nga, pwede siyang maging soundtrack na pwede like
13:02.3
there's a scene in the middle of the song, ganun.
13:05.3
Tapos nakalimutan ko siya ng sulatan.
13:09.1
So I sat down and tried not to panic.
13:14.0
And yun nga, yun yung naging default ko na parang I just, okay, young people, young
13:20.3
But I didn't want it to be just straightforward lang na young love.
13:23.0
I wanted the whole yearning factor na may pagka-unrequited love, ganun.
13:30.3
And na-inspire din ako sa beat niya, parang it was so clear and so expressive na I couldn't
13:37.0
help but imagine specific scenarios in my head.
13:40.2
So parang what I imagined was, yun nga, two best friends walking along the beach tapos
13:45.6
Tapos it was the end of their day and one of them was falling in love with the other.
13:49.8
And so alam mo yung universal feeling na if you're spending the day with someone you
13:55.0
really care about or you're developing feelings for, parang ayaw mo pang matapos.
13:58.9
So meron kang irrational thought na sana hindi na lang matapos tong araw na to and sana
14:02.3
hindi pa to yung end of it and sana hindi mo na tayo umuwi, ganun.
14:08.6
So yun, that's where it started.
14:15.0
Tapos I wrote it and I recorded it.
14:17.0
And yun, I sent it to Bojam.
14:19.3
He really liked it.
14:20.3
And honestly, I felt like he was surprised kasi nakalimutan ko siyang gawin.
14:25.3
Tapos he actually added a scene during the intro.
14:29.9
Wala pa yung ooh na part ng girls.
14:33.6
Parang he added a scene from The House of Us.
14:36.3
Yung away ni KathNiel habang umuulan.
14:41.2
So meron, when we pitched it to-
14:43.8
House of Us mo yun.
14:45.7
Yeah, yung sa House of Us.
14:48.7
14:58.2
Tapos, as in, funny kasi umawat.
15:01.2
So yun yung demo when Star and Beanie heard it.
15:05.4
So, ang funny kasi when we were recording it na,
15:08.7
memorized na ng Beanie yung scene na yun.
15:11.8
Kasi inaral nila yung song.
15:13.0
Tapos yun yung nagpiplay sa intro.
15:15.0
Kasi yun, I think he just wanted to set the scene when we were pitching the song.
15:22.5
That's the story of huwag muna tayong umuwi.
15:25.6
Pero, pati, lumabas po yung huwag muna tayo umuwi before At Inconvenient Love, no?
15:34.2
Parang sobrang fit po kasi nung song.
15:37.1
Paano pong reaksyon nyo nung nalaman nyo na it would be part of the soundtrack?
15:43.1
We were so happy and we were so kilig.
15:44.8
Kasi Don Bell pa yun.
15:46.1
Tapos parang yun nga, I was so happy that,
15:49.0
kasi yun nga, that was Bojang's vision sa song na parang,
15:53.0
gusto ko, ay, na-imagine ko tong soundtrack ng isang film.
15:56.2
And it actually happened.
15:58.6
And we were so happy and we were so grateful that
16:01.4
star music and star cinema believed in the song.
16:07.4
And to the point that they actually used it for a Don Bell film.
16:14.2
We were very happy.
16:16.6
And sobrang fit po yung story kasi parang nagkikling nga sina Deidre.
16:22.8
We didn't write it.
16:23.8
Yeah, hindi naman namin siya sinulat for the film.
16:25.8
So, parang, I guess, tsamba na rin na yun yung story nung film.
16:30.2
And sumakto siya dun sa message nung song.
16:35.2
Ano rin po, kasi na-observe din po namin.
16:38.7
Na-observe po namin na parang yung mga songs nyo, very ano siya.
16:43.9
Usually, for example, Beanie.
16:48.8
Usually, it caters for heterosexual na ano.
16:53.5
Pero sobrang lutang yung queer undertones dun sa song.
16:59.1
At talagang nagagamit siya for sapphic and for queer content.
17:03.8
How does it feel na nagka-come across pa rin yung ganung undertones
17:09.8
despite na nagagamit po siya for this content?
17:15.8
I mean, nung bata ko, I've always yearned for representation.
17:23.7
Lalo na when I was a teenager, I did not actually fully accept myself yet.
17:29.4
Honestly, naingit ako ng slight sa mga kabataan ngayon
17:32.5
kasi ang dami nilang representation.
17:37.4
I think a lot, there are a lot less members of the LGBT community sa youth.
17:44.1
They're more secure with themselves kasi ang dami nilang nakikita sa media.
17:47.6
I mean, it's still not as much as with heterosexual representation.
17:55.6
Pero I'm just happy and grateful that I can help, in a way, young queer people
18:04.6
the way I wanted to be helped when I was a young queer person.
18:09.0
And honestly, hindi ko naman sinasadya.
18:11.3
When I sit down to write, hindi ko naman iniisip na parang
18:14.0
ito ang magiging bagong sapphic anthem naman.
18:19.7
It's a job and I have to write it for artists.
18:23.5
So siguro lumalabas lang talaga siya as someone who's in the community.
18:30.1
And I'm so, honestly, I'm so happy and nakakatua
18:35.6
na laging nilalagay huwag muna tayong umuwi sa scenes sa films ni Samli.
18:41.7
Because I love Samli and she is a good friend and she is an amazing director.
18:47.4
And she is an amazing role model for good sapphic representation.
18:55.9
And that makes me very happy and it makes me very fulfilled as a songwriter.
19:02.7
And as someone who creates to help people.
19:05.9
And that's always been my why in being a songwriter.
19:08.4
I want to provide comfort for people.
19:10.8
And gusto kong malaman nila na hindi sila nag-iisa and they are seen and they are loved.
19:19.7
Yung pangarap ko talagang makagawa ng soundtrack for a sapphic film or a sapphic show.
19:30.2
After nun, sa tingin niyo po, ano po ba yung importance na even in this sobrang simple
19:38.3
lang na feeling as kilig, nararamdaman na isang queer person na represented siya dun sa song.
19:46.6
And sa content na nakokonsume niya.
19:51.7
I think it's very important talaga.
19:53.2
Kasi, I think parang nung earlier times, ang usually na, parang I think my wife and I
20:01.8
talk about this a lot na we really need more art and media na queer na yung feel good lang.
20:09.9
Parang hindi siya, walang drama involved.
20:12.8
It's just a regular love story.
20:14.5
It's just a regular love song.
20:17.3
Na if you look at it from the outside or if you listen to it, parang it can pass off
20:23.2
as a heterosexual love story or a heterosexual love song.
20:26.7
Kasi, I think young queer people need to be reminded or be assured na parang there's nothing
20:33.8
wrong with being who they are.
20:37.1
And hindi magugunaw ang mundo pag nalaman ng mga tao kung ano sila.
20:40.7
Because it's a normal thing to be and loving someone of the same gender isn't the explosive
20:50.8
dramatic thing that some pieces of media portray it to be.
20:56.3
And we can live our lives the way straight people do and if they do decide to be open
21:08.8
about themselves, yun nga.
21:10.1
Parang maraming mag-eembrace sa kanila and at the same time, they are still the same
21:14.4
people and they remain to be normal people.
21:19.9
So, I think that's why I love the fact din na my songs get interpreted as queer love
21:29.7
songs and as queer undertones.
21:31.1
Kasi yun nga, I never intended for them to be that way.
21:34.9
So, if some people see it as straight love songs, then that's great.
21:38.6
But the fact that other people see it as queer love songs, it just furthers the point na
21:44.6
queer love and straight love aren't that different from each other.
21:48.1
So, I'm happy that I helped strengthen that point.
21:53.1
And now naman po, siyempre, with Karera.
21:56.1
How does it feel na parang kayo na po yung staple na parang songwriter nakasama ng
22:00.7
bini sa different eras nila in their music?
22:05.6
I'm honestly just very honored because I'm not a super dance-y person.
22:13.4
So, I'm also very lucky that Bojam creates these songs with me kasi he really knows,
22:21.4
he really embodies the sound of P-pop.
22:23.8
And I'm just honestly along for the ride.
22:28.1
I like writing lyrics for such talented people talaga.
22:32.6
And that's one of my favorite parts of being a songwriter for artists talaga,
22:37.8
is watching the thing you write come to life.
22:40.9
And lalo na with Wag Muna Tayong Umuwi and Karera, na imagine mo na silang kinakanta.
22:48.6
Kinakanta yung song mo tapos when it actually happens and it's there and it's amazing.
22:53.4
Nakakatua and nakaka-fulfill.
22:55.6
And I'm so thankful din sa Blooms and all of their supporters kasi they embrace our
23:03.4
songs and our music and they appreciate the things that we create for bini.
23:11.3
And yun, sana nandun pa rin ako sa future eras nila.
23:19.7
Last nalo po, do you have anything to add na hindi po natin na-discuss in our conversation?
23:28.0
Stream Karera and the music video by Umi As Manila.
23:33.7
So watch that also if you haven't, or watch it again.
23:41.1
Thank you so much.
23:56.7
So may reveal pag bukas na.
24:06.6
Pagpapatanong sa akin na tropo ko, mag-usulat ka daw ba para sa alamat?
24:13.2
Hindi pa ako nakakontakt.
24:16.0
Game naman ako if dumating yung chance, yun yung opportunity.
24:22.2
Salamat po mga babay po.
