We Got Alex Diaz To Give Advice on Career, Love, and Life | Filipino | Rec•Create
00:36.0
which is about four law students navigating the pitfalls of law school.
00:40.2
We are currently working on the premiere of my first international film,
00:45.7
which is Glitter and Doom.
00:47.3
It is a jukebox musical to the tune of the Indigo Girls.
00:51.5
And we have stars like Ming-Na Wen, Missy Pyle,
00:57.4
The only Filipino in the cast.
00:59.2
So I'm very excited about that.
01:00.7
So how does one even start out in the industry?
01:03.6
I started out performing when I was 12.
01:06.0
And so I think that's the very start.
01:08.0
I was Simba in my high school play.
01:10.6
And from there, Facebook had just started booming
01:12.9
and I was getting messages from managers in different networks.
01:17.2
And so I'd never been to Manila at that point.
01:20.2
For me, North was Alabang.
01:21.9
So I remember when I was 14, I auditioned for PBB.
01:25.7
Long story short, my dad,
01:27.2
wasn't supportive of my career at that time
01:28.9
because I was still studying.
01:30.3
So as soon as I got to college,
01:31.7
I started doing commercials behind my family's back
01:35.1
and that started popping off.
01:36.9
So from there, I was scouted into Star Magic off the radio
01:40.3
because I was doing radio for RX 93.1.
01:43.4
Yeah, from there, I was launched and nobody knew me.
01:45.5
Yeah, that's kind of how it all started for me.
01:47.3
The one thing I can say about starting out in showbiz is
01:50.4
be proud of every opportunity that comes for you,
01:53.0
even if it's small or great.
01:54.7
The concept of gratitude is so important,
01:56.9
because kung hindi ka makuntento sa maliit,
01:58.9
hindi ka magiging kontento sa pagmalaki na yung dumarating sa'yo.
02:02.4
So always be proud of yourself.
02:04.2
From my first candy cutie stint
02:06.7
all the way to my first Mega Magazine cover,
02:09.7
one thing I would tell my younger self is really enjoy the moment.
02:13.7
Surround yourself with good people.
02:15.8
With your busy schedule,
02:17.5
yes, busy schedule,
02:19.8
how do you manage to maintain a healthy work-life balance,
02:22.1
especially with relationships?
02:24.3
I don't think I'm the right person to ask about this because at this point in my life,
02:26.9
I have, sinukuan ko na ang work-life balance.
02:29.9
As in, when I was in my early 20s, I'm like,
02:31.6
oh, kailangan mag-beach tayo and then after ako mag-work,
02:34.8
kailangan alamin parang may time with friends and stuff.
02:38.1
At this point in my life, in this economy,
02:40.8
sinukuan ko na po yung work-life balance.
02:43.0
I think, swerte ako kasi mahal na mahal ko yung trabaho ko.
02:45.6
Like, whenever I go to work, I have to pinch myself na para,
02:48.2
I'm doing this, but at the same time,
02:50.0
I have to remind myself that I'm doing this because
02:52.3
I had unwavering faith in my ability.
02:55.6
Even when I watch back my old videos and medyo cringe ako
02:58.6
kasi sobrang OA ako when I was younger.
03:01.1
But hey, this industry is all about the makapal na face.
03:04.9
So you have to have a thick face.
03:06.5
I think work-life balance is a myth in some ways because
03:10.4
if you are blessed to wake up doing what you love
03:13.8
or if you know in your mind what your end goal is,
03:16.7
then you'll get there.
03:17.7
But in terms of balance, work-rest balance.
03:21.3
You need to be able to get eight hours of sleep.
03:24.2
You need to be able to get up at night.
03:25.2
You need to be able to get up at night.
03:25.5
You need to be able to pick and choose the moments
03:27.3
that you are going to partake in sad,
03:31.1
which is self-aided destruction like partying,
03:34.0
having a good time.
03:35.2
Choose those moments and choose them less
03:37.5
pag medyo tumandahan na.
03:38.9
Bata ka pa, pwede pa.
03:41.0
Pero when you're older, choose those moments carefully.
03:43.9
In an industry where there is a lot of pressure to conform,
03:46.5
how do you stay true to yourself?
03:48.3
That's an interesting question because
03:51.2
I feel like one thing I realized is that
03:53.2
your self is always changing.
03:55.2
So if what was true to you when you were 20
03:58.0
may not be true when you're 24,
03:59.8
may not be true when you're 27.
04:01.5
So really just love yourself through
04:04.3
your ever-changing personality.
04:06.3
Because there are times where I would look back at myself,
04:08.6
especially in this industry where
04:10.3
you say something and that video goes viral,
04:12.6
immortal na siya eh.
04:13.8
Hindi na nag-age yung video.
04:15.6
So what I was saying five, six years ago,
04:18.1
even if it was uploaded then,
04:19.7
as long as pumapatak yung views,
04:21.5
people are watching it,
04:22.5
you will be referenced to.
04:25.0
And sometimes all it takes is one picture to define you.
04:28.1
But in acting, we say you were only as good as your last work.
04:31.7
So in this industry,
04:33.4
spend enough time with yourself
04:35.1
and journal and meditate and get to know yourself.
04:37.9
Keep discovering parts of yourself
04:39.7
that you can share with the world.
04:41.1
Come from a place that is not ego-driven.
04:44.3
For me, it's representation.
04:46.3
You know, I'm many things.
04:47.6
I'm an actor, a creator, I'm a performer.
04:51.9
I'm also, you know, I'm very into activism.
04:55.0
But come from those things
04:56.2
and not just wanting to be seen
04:58.3
and just wanting to be heard.
05:00.4
You know, every time I look back on my past,
05:02.2
I always, I don't see it as myself.
05:03.9
I see it as, you know, an inner child.
05:06.0
I don't think adults,
05:07.0
adults don't act out.
05:08.2
You know, when somebody's acting out,
05:09.4
it's the inner child that's crying for attention.
05:12.0
And I just remember being so young and just,
05:14.0
you know, we all go through our own problems.
05:16.3
And it's our duty as citizens of this world
05:19.8
to never impede or fuck with anybody else's humanity.
05:23.4
But to also understand, you know, that we are here.
05:24.2
To understand ourself.
05:26.0
And sometimes that only comes looking back.
05:27.7
So when I see the decisions and the choices that I made
05:30.3
when I was younger, more crazy,
05:32.2
I just try to look at myself with compassion.
05:34.3
And, you know, I remember when I was 23,
05:36.5
I remember looking out the window
05:38.1
and I remember imagining myself
05:40.1
looking at an older version of myself
05:41.6
and asking myself, like, does it get better?
05:43.6
And looking back at that version of myself
05:45.8
and just giving him a hug and saying like,
05:47.6
it does get better.
05:48.6
Because it really does.
05:49.9
It really does get better.
05:51.3
Thank you, Miss Universe 2020.
05:55.8
How do you handle criticism and negative feedback
05:59.1
both in your professional and personal life?
06:01.9
Um, I'm a very sensitive soul.
06:05.0
My first response is to take offense.
06:07.8
So I have to retreat into my shell
06:10.0
and I have to really hihimayin ko talaga.
06:12.7
Like, what part of this is coming from their projections
06:15.0
and what part of this is something that I can integrate
06:17.1
into my career, you know?
06:18.6
In today's society, if you're looking to become a content creator,
06:21.5
more so now than ever,
06:25.4
they are still views. They are still
06:27.9
clicks. It is still reach.
06:30.0
It just depends on how you handle it. So,
06:32.1
you know, if you said something bad online
06:33.8
or you did something that wasn't tasteful
06:36.0
or something like that, una-una sa lahat, you have to come back
06:38.1
to yourself and realize, did I do something wrong?
06:40.3
And if you did something wrong, come from a
06:42.0
place of honesty to do better.
06:44.1
You know, there are two types of people in this world.
06:46.0
It's either that breaks you
06:47.8
or they are just another
06:50.1
you know, building block for
06:52.0
the person, the inevitable
06:53.6
amazing person you will become.
06:56.8
What is the best love advice you have
06:58.1
ever heard? I think love yourself
07:00.2
first. Love yourself first.
07:02.0
Fill your cup. Someone is not meant
07:03.8
to be the center of your universe. They are meant
07:06.0
to be a part of your constellation.
07:08.0
They are meant to complement your life. So,
07:10.0
ganun. If you ever feel like you're getting to the point
07:11.8
na parang you can't live without a person,
07:13.8
it's time to reassess the relationship.
07:15.9
Not naman leave the relationship, but
07:18.0
reassess your value
07:20.2
system. See, we have the pillars of our
07:21.9
life. We have love,
07:25.6
spiritual, self-actualization
07:27.5
and the love of your life is just
07:29.6
one part of that. I don't know, that might
07:31.6
work for you. If it works for you, great.
07:33.9
How do you continue to grow and evolve
07:35.9
both personally and professionally?
07:38.3
As cliche as this
07:39.7
sound, I've always wanted to
07:41.5
pursue mastery of self and
07:43.7
even in the moments where I have
07:45.5
made mistakes, I try to view them as
07:47.5
lessons. I've come to realize that
07:49.5
it is inevitable that you will not
07:51.8
become more aware of your life.
07:53.6
As you live it, kasalanan ng
07:55.5
pumikit kapag namulat ka na
07:57.6
sa mga realities ng life mo.
07:59.8
And that's just how we grow as humans,
08:02.0
diba? The only thing inevitable in life
08:03.6
is change. And when we try to resist
08:05.6
that, that's where the friction
08:06.9
comes in. So, just really lean into
08:11.8
gratitude, gratitude.
08:13.7
Really be thankful for, if you can't see the
08:15.6
big things, be thankful that the sun came
08:17.6
up today and be thankful that you have two feet
08:19.8
and two legs that can walk. Professionally,
08:23.4
my therapist, everybody, go to therapy.
08:25.5
It is a mental workout
08:27.5
just like a physical workout. But I was told
08:29.4
by my therapist that showbiz is a
08:31.6
business of optics.
08:33.5
So, you have to separate your personal self
08:35.6
from your professional self.
08:37.3
And I think that applies to kahit anong trabaho
08:39.4
na papasukan nyo. Okay guys, I hope
08:41.5
you got to know me just a little bit better
08:43.4
and I hope that I imparted some
08:45.3
advice to you. But,
08:47.2
I don't know if it ruins your life.
08:49.9
Don't listen to it. But if
08:51.4
it did help you, I'm happy. And while
08:53.4
you're at it, please, please, please, don't forget to catch
08:55.4
Glitter and Doom ngayong June 5
08:57.4
na po in Ayala Cinemas
09:23.4
Thank you for watching!
