How Half-Pinay Miss Universe 2022 R'Bonney Gabriel Handled Rigging Accusations | Toni Talks
00:37.0
Thank you! You look beautiful!
00:38.6
When I won Miss Universe, it was amazing.
00:41.9
But now that I'm not Miss Universe anymore, I'm like, okay, I'm nothing anymore.
00:46.1
There was a lot of allegations and rumors.
00:49.5
They got really out of hand.
00:51.2
It wasn't just internet hate.
00:54.1
We had controversy of...
00:56.0
They were all saying that I rigged the pageant.
00:57.8
I think this is a really great story when someone or even a woman is reaching so high for a goal.
01:06.6
And society or life or something tries to bring you down, you never let that stand in the way.
01:26.0
So you're thinking then, they did it.
01:46.1
You know, coming out of Miss Universe, I always felt like I needed to be so perfect.
01:52.0
And I want Filipinos to know there's so much more to me.
01:55.3
I'm learning so much.
01:56.0
to be more comfortable in my own skin,
01:58.2
show a classy side and a professional
02:00.2
side, but I'm really fun and
02:02.2
goofy as well. And I've really
02:04.2
over the last couple months
02:06.2
grown comfortable with
02:07.9
being a little bit
02:09.2
more unpolished on camera because that's
02:12.0
truly who I am and I think a lot of people
02:14.2
can relate with that as well.
02:17.0
What do you love most about
02:18.1
the Philippines? Oh my gosh,
02:20.0
so many things. I mean, for one, when
02:22.1
I got here, I just felt so inspired
02:24.2
and motivated. I really feel
02:26.2
at home here. I feel the community.
02:28.6
I feel the love and
02:30.4
there's a lot of times I just don't
02:32.2
feel like a foreigner. My heart is so happy
02:34.1
here and I thank the Filipinos for
02:36.2
always supporting me and
02:37.5
letting me be here and really explore
02:40.0
and connect with my Filipino roots.
02:42.2
And it's been a fantasy of mine
02:43.6
to come here and live in the Philippines
02:48.2
thought after Miss Universe was the perfect
02:50.2
time to do it. For me, I grew up
02:52.1
in America, just born and raised, so
02:54.1
I've always wanted to learn more about Filipino
02:56.2
culture. But you've been visiting the Philippines
02:58.4
when you were younger, right?
03:00.6
Visiting, yes. In Manila,
03:02.4
mostly in Malate, where my dad is from.
03:04.3
So I would visit as a child for maybe
03:06.2
one or two weeks, but
03:08.4
there's so much of the Philippines to explore
03:10.4
still. So how would you describe
03:14.2
interracial household? Like having
03:16.4
a Filipino dad and
03:18.2
a mom who's American. How's like
03:20.3
the discipline and the dynamics?
03:22.5
Okay, so my dad is definitely,
03:24.1
the strict Filipino dad.
03:26.3
My mom is definitely
03:27.7
a little bit softer and if
03:30.1
for example, I wanted to go hang out with a friend,
03:32.5
I would always go to mom first
03:34.0
because she would say yes, but then she's like,
03:36.0
oh, ask your dad! And he would say no,
03:40.3
you were like, let's say, four or five
03:42.3
years old, if you recall
03:44.2
back then, what was your dream?
03:46.7
I thought I wanted to be a teacher
03:48.1
actually. And then when
03:52.1
in my teenage years,
03:54.1
age 15, that's when I really felt like
03:56.1
I found my passion for sewing
03:58.1
and design. And that became
04:00.3
my dream, which I'm thankful
04:02.1
I'm living it now, but I really
04:04.2
found my calling, I feel like, when I was
04:06.3
a teenager. In creating clothes,
04:08.4
designing. But you never
04:10.3
dreamed of becoming a beauty queen like
04:12.2
Miss Universe? Honestly, no.
04:14.1
I always wanted to be a model
04:16.1
in that regards, a fashion
04:20.4
modeling in my hometown of Houston,
04:22.4
Texas. But a beauty queen,
04:24.1
a beauty queen was not really on the radar
04:26.1
until I was introduced
04:28.0
to it by a stylist, and that
04:31.9
during the pandemic, actually.
04:34.3
And she introduces the idea
04:36.1
to me, and she's like, you
04:37.5
would do really well in pageants. And I'm like, huh?
04:40.5
What? I'm not even familiar with pageants.
04:42.5
I know what Miss Universe is, I've
04:44.2
watched it, but I always looked
04:46.3
at those girls competing, and I thought,
04:48.3
wow, they're so amazing. But basically,
04:50.2
this woman, she ended up tricking
04:52.3
me. She said, can you come
04:54.1
model for me for a photoshoot? I said, I'll be
04:56.1
there. So I arrive at this photoshoot,
04:58.3
and it's actually a pageant training
05:00.2
school. And I walk in,
05:02.3
they sit me down, I'm ready to
05:04.2
do my photoshoot, and this woman,
05:06.3
she says, I'm so glad you're
05:08.1
interested in doing a pageant.
05:10.3
And I was like, what? I'm looking around, I was like,
05:12.1
am I being pranked? Like, I didn't sign
05:14.1
up for this, and I had this intuition
05:15.9
telling me, and I felt like God was telling me,
05:18.2
you should go for it. You should really go for
05:20.2
it. And it's something I couldn't ignore.
05:22.1
Did you like it in the beginning?
05:24.1
My first beauty pageant was Miss Kima,
05:26.8
so a small local one, and I
05:28.6
trained about two months for it.
05:30.6
And that was my introduction into what it's all
05:32.7
about. Speaking coaches, hair,
05:35.0
makeup. The question and answer
05:36.8
portion? Oh my gosh, I'm
05:38.7
so nervous. I thought,
05:40.9
what did I get myself into? This is a lot.
05:42.9
This isn't just, oh, let me try it.
05:45.1
You really have to train,
05:46.8
and it was very intimidating.
05:49.5
And I got first runner
05:50.7
up. It was a small pageant, but
05:52.2
I learned so many things.
05:54.1
Speaking was getting much better
05:56.3
because I was so shy.
05:58.1
Basically, I did another local
06:00.1
pageant. I did three pageants,
06:02.5
and I got first runner up every single time.
06:04.9
My fourth pageant,
06:06.2
I finally won Miss Texas.
06:08.9
Then it let me go to Miss USA
06:10.5
and then Miss Universe.
06:12.5
What was the most challenging part
06:13.9
during the whole process? One simple thing
06:16.3
is self-doubt and eliminating that.
06:20.2
when I won my national title of Miss USA.
06:24.1
lot of allegations and rumors.
06:26.2
The controversy. They got really out of hand.
06:29.4
internet hate. We had
06:32.0
controversy of girls saying that I
06:34.1
rigged the pageant. And it actually
06:38.1
wins in the major news outlets
06:40.3
in the States, picked it up.
06:44.1
not known as the girl that wins Miss USA,
06:46.1
but the girl that rigged Miss USA
06:48.3
because people read headlines and that's it.
06:50.1
They stole the thunder. They did.
06:52.5
And so, I thought, oh my gosh,
06:54.1
now that's my name.
06:55.9
Instead of being celebrated, you're being
06:58.3
accused of something.
06:59.9
So, how did you handle that controversy?
07:02.7
You know, I felt so depressed
07:04.3
because I thought, also,
07:06.1
I need to train for Miss Universe. This is
07:08.1
distracting. I lost
07:10.1
the director had to step down,
07:12.8
the social media, the whole
07:14.2
team, and the prize package you get
07:16.4
as Miss USA got taken away from me.
07:18.7
So, you really feel so
07:20.4
unmotivated. Like, why did I do
07:22.4
pageantry? Where's the beauty?
07:24.1
And the empowerment of women?
07:26.6
And it definitely made me feel like
07:28.4
not believing in the system.
07:30.3
But I had three months to train
07:32.2
for Miss Universe. I had a
07:34.1
lawsuit because they had to
07:36.3
really go through
07:37.4
all my paperwork, text messages,
07:40.4
even my computer to see.
07:41.9
Did she rig it? Did she have side conversations?
07:44.6
So, I said, I'll do the lawsuit because
07:46.0
I have nothing to hide. Yes, a blessing.
07:48.6
It was a painful journey.
07:50.5
But you learned so much about yourself.
07:52.1
I really did. A blessing in
07:54.0
disguise. I mean, life always throws
07:55.9
things at us no matter what. And for
07:58.0
me, I thought, this is really bad timing.
08:00.0
But looking back at it now, now that
08:02.0
I've gone through it, I thought it was the perfect timing
08:04.1
because it really gave me motivation
08:05.8
in the end. What do you want
08:07.9
people to learn about your
08:09.8
story? I think this is a really
08:13.9
someone or even a woman is
08:16.0
reaching so high for
08:17.8
a goal. And society
08:20.2
or life or something tries to
08:22.1
bring you down, you never let that
08:24.0
stand in the way. Don't let
08:26.0
that adversity win
08:27.8
because you'll thank yourself
08:30.2
later for not letting anybody stand
08:32.2
in the way of your goals or
08:34.0
what you want to do in life.
08:35.6
Because looking back now that you have conquered the crown,
08:38.3
you've reached the ultimate dream
08:40.0
of a beauty queen. You reached
08:42.0
the top. You became the Miss
08:44.0
Universe. What is your
08:46.1
new dream now? Because we
08:48.0
never stop dreaming, right? Right.
08:50.0
That's a great question because
08:51.9
when I won Miss Universe,
08:54.0
it was amazing. But
08:55.7
now that I'm not Miss Universe anymore, I'm like
08:58.1
that can't be just the pinnacle
09:00.1
of my career. I think a lot
09:02.1
of beauty queens can say that. And as a woman.
09:03.8
It's like, what's next?
09:05.9
And luckily, I still have the burning
09:08.0
passion to continue being a sustainable
09:10.2
fashion designer. In that regards,
09:12.5
I'm still promoting
09:13.5
my pieces that I'm making. I'm making videos
09:16.3
on recycled materials.
09:18.0
But I love teaching sewing classes.
09:20.3
That's something I did back in Texas
09:22.0
and I recently just
09:23.9
worked with Smile Train a couple days ago
09:25.9
and taught a confidence boot
09:27.9
camp and a sewing workshop.
09:30.2
And I hope to continue to do that
09:31.9
in the Philippines as well.
09:33.9
I would say around the three pillars. Modeling,
09:36.8
sustainable fashion design,
09:38.6
and hosting public
09:39.8
speaking. Now that you have experienced
09:41.7
being Miss Universe, what
09:43.6
is it that you want people to know
09:45.8
about beauty queens?
09:49.8
working. It is so hard to
09:52.0
even compete and be in the
09:53.8
top five of your pageant.
09:55.7
And I think a lot of people see the
09:57.4
final show, the runway,
09:59.9
the swimsuit, the gown, but there's
10:01.5
so much work and dedication
10:03.2
and intelligence that a beauty queen has.
10:07.9
easy. I feel like we make it look easy
10:10.0
but it's a lot of work.
10:11.7
Because it looks so glamorous on stage.
10:13.3
It looks so glamorous, but
10:14.9
all beauty queens are really great speakers.
10:17.8
And for me, I think a great
10:19.8
communicator is a very powerful thing.
10:21.8
You have to get out of your comfort zone
10:23.8
if you really want to grow. I feel like a comfort
10:25.9
zone is comfortable, but it's a bad
10:27.9
place to be. Because in life, we should
10:29.7
always be challenging ourselves.
10:31.5
What's the biggest challenge for you now?
10:33.7
You know, I'm still my own worst enemy.
10:35.6
I'm so hard on myself.
10:38.1
And coming out of
10:39.6
Miss Universe, I still feel fresh.
10:41.6
I gave up my crown about five months ago.
10:44.5
So, it was bittersweet.
10:46.2
I absolutely loved being
10:47.7
Miss Universe. I could have done it for
10:49.8
two more years. I loved it.
10:52.3
But, you're on such
10:53.8
a high all year as Miss Universe.
10:57.6
And anytime you walk
10:59.8
in a room, everybody's so excited because
11:01.6
you're Miss Universe. So, I was so
11:03.7
spoiled in that regards. Always having
11:05.6
attention, you know, flying around,
11:08.2
having the best service.
11:09.5
So, it's really not reality.
11:12.0
So, coming out of Miss Universe,
11:13.9
you're humbled and you get
11:15.7
hit with reality again. Like, okay,
11:17.8
no one's taking care of me anymore.
11:19.5
No more management. No more team.
11:23.6
that, you know, I felt really low
11:25.6
those first months because you're like, okay,
11:27.6
what now? And I learned, I was gaining
11:29.6
all my confidence from people just loving
11:31.8
me and giving me attention last year
11:33.7
and being so excited. Validation.
11:35.6
So, when it goes away, my confidence
11:37.8
went away with it. I thought, okay, I'm nothing
11:39.7
anymore. So, I've been able to do
11:41.6
the self-work and realize confidence
11:43.8
can't come from the external factors.
11:46.1
It can't come from always getting
11:47.8
attention from people. It has to come from yourself.
11:51.6
Arboni, what do you want them to,
11:53.6
to remember about
11:55.7
you? I want people to remember me
11:57.7
as the hardworking, unique
11:59.9
queen. You know, I always embraced
12:01.6
every side of me. I wasn't, I wasn't
12:03.9
scared to show me messing
12:05.8
up or being imperfect and just being
12:07.9
really comfortable in my own skin
12:09.7
at the end of the day. It's your super power.
12:12.4
It's not trying to be like
12:13.7
anybody else. I've tried that route.
12:15.5
I understand the pressure from society
12:18.0
to feel like you need to talk
12:19.6
a certain way, look a certain
12:23.6
a certain career path, but
12:25.2
I think we're all born with our superpowers
12:27.6
already, and young
12:29.8
girls, young boys, anybody just needs
12:31.7
to do the self-work to identify that.
12:34.2
Whether that's like, you like
12:35.6
the creative arts, you like sports,
12:38.2
you're really good in your studies,
12:41.7
path, but you need to understand
12:43.6
what your strengths are that
12:45.5
other people don't have that's unique to you
12:47.8
and that will be your super power that will
12:49.6
propel you through life.
12:53.6
Have you learned any
12:59.4
Filipino language?
13:01.7
I know some phrases
13:03.4
like, pagod na ako,
13:08.1
gusto mo ng tinapay,
13:11.7
What? Gusto mo ng tinapay?
13:14.2
What? Gusto mo ng tinapay?
13:15.5
Why are you like bread?
13:18.8
We have gay lingos also.
13:21.0
Oh, I've learned some of those too.
13:22.7
What are the gay lingos?
13:30.1
Nice, nice, nice.
13:34.2
Kabog is like bongga.
13:36.4
Yeah, bongga, charot.
13:38.2
Bumunta ako sa Malate.
13:45.6
Miraculous is like Wednesday?
13:51.5
Nice, nice, nice.
13:53.6
Thank you for watching!
