Djokovic looks to prolong era with unfinished business at Roland Garros | ABS-CBN News
As the sun begins to set on the last of the 'Big Four' in tennis, Serbia's Novak Djokovic is adamant he will be the last man standing even as twice-Olympic champion Andy Murray bids farewell to the sport after the Paris Games.
Britain's Murray, who won singles gold in 2012 and 2016, will play only in the doubles before the 37-year-old retires, while Djokovic could meet record 14-times French Open champion Rafael Nadal in the second round.
With Roger Federer putting his feet up after retirement in 2022 and Nadal also nearing the end of a long and glorious career, the burden of prolonging the 'Big Four' era falls squarely on Djokovic's shoulders.
Djokovic described youngsters Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner as the two best players in the world who will "carry the sport into the future", but that was not going to stop the Serbian from striving to win titles.

Yes, I heard the news about Andy and I hope that he will have the best possible farewell
00:26.7
and his last competitive match here in Olympics for him and his country.
00:33.1
He has been a legend. He is a legend of our sport.
00:36.7
He has been an incredibly important player for tennis globally.
00:42.5
Nadal, of course, the same, even more.
00:45.6
All the results and achievements he has had, particularly in this city, in Roland Garros.
00:53.7
Nadal still didn't say when his last tournament will be.
00:56.8
So, hopefully, for the sake of the sport, he can keep going.
01:01.6
We also, this year, haven't had time to prepare properly because the tennis calendar was very busy.
01:09.3
I don't have the retirement close in my mind, to be honest,
01:13.4
even though I know a lot of people would love me to retire so that this era is done.
01:18.3
But I think as long as there is at least one of us left,
01:26.8
competition, I think the era is still going.
01:29.3
Of course, there is a change of generations and you have Alcaraz and Sinner.
01:35.1
Currently, there are two best players in the world, deservably.
01:39.0
I mean, they are playing on a very high level, particularly this year.
01:43.8
And they are very young and they are going to carry this sport in the future.
01:49.5
But I've been present for the shift or the change of many generations in the last 15 years.
01:56.7
I like to see that, but I think it's also great that I'm still able to play Nadal himself
02:05.8
and other veterans like Wawrinka that have won multiple Grand Slams and made a big name in the sport.
02:13.0
So, I think that also adds, how can I say, more significance and attention to our sport.
02:19.2
And I think it's a nice, fine balance.
02:21.1
Of course, the end is nearer than the beginning.
02:23.6
I know that for me personally as well.
02:26.7
I still enjoy competition and I'll keep going until I don't enjoy it anymore.
02:37.3
Elizabeth and Zampieri from SES Perform.
02:39.0
I have a question for you on...
02:41.6
I know that there is a great interest for that eventual duel in the second round.
02:47.4
Of course, we both have to dominate the first opponent to get to that eventual match
02:53.8
which will surely be a spectacle.
02:56.7
But, I think it's a good thing that we have a good old time when we played on more or less all the big tennis courts all over the world.
03:06.9
So, I'm excited for that eventual duel.
03:11.2
But, of course, I have to overcome the first obstacle and give everything I have to go as far as I can.
03:18.7
Of course, I'm aware of the weight of the Olympic tournament which is, like this,
03:26.9
much different from the other tournaments that we play on Roland Garros
03:33.2
which is well known to all of us, especially on the DAL.
03:37.5
But, on the other hand,
03:42.6
it's a different feeling because you represent your Olympic team, your country.
03:47.8
And that's an additional responsibility and, of course, an additional pressure.
03:50.5
But, it's not something I'm not used to.
03:52.8
So, I'll try to be the fifth lucky.
03:56.7
Hopefully, I'll be able to have a great tournament.
04:06.2
You know, I've had plenty of success in Roland Garros where Olympic tennis tournament is played.
04:11.4
I know the venue well.
04:13.1
And, yeah, I'm just hoping I can bring the joy to our nation with the medal.
