Rowena Waters, a name that will be remembered in Carleton, Texas history.
00:06.0
It was a historic moment for Filipino-Americans in the Texas City,
00:10.0
as she swore into a seat at the Carleton City Council in May.
00:14.5
Born and raised in the Philippines, she moved to the United States for postgraduate studies
00:19.6
and eventually launched her business in North Texas.
00:24.0
I've been working with communities for a long time, even in the Philippines.
00:28.5
I started social work at 11.
00:31.5
So the journey of service is a long time, and it's part of who I am in the circle that I move around in.
00:39.0
Waters' journey to City Council wasn't easy.
00:42.3
She faced numerous challenges, from adjusting to living in a new country
00:46.6
to breaking barriers in a predominantly male political landscape.
00:51.4
But Waters says it was unwavering determination and dedication,
00:55.5
coupled with the support she received,
00:57.8
that made all the difference.
01:00.8
Intense. But, you know, I'm very, very surprised I got to this point.
01:05.8
And what's more surprising and amazing is the support that I got,
01:09.1
not just from the Filipino community, although that was really good,
01:13.1
but also from the communities around us, the ethnic communities and the locals.
01:19.0
They are ready to embrace a Filipino.
01:20.9
It's a great honor for all of us Filipinos,
01:24.6
because many have been dreaming of,
01:27.8
of representing the Filipino community in high political positions like this.
01:33.1
But this is the first time in our community here in northern North Texas
01:38.3
that we have a Filipino who won a place in a very prestigious city like Carrollton, Texas.
01:47.7
And we're very, very proud of Rowena.
01:49.9
Waters' platform puts a focus on key issues,
01:52.7
such as affordable housing, education, and improving ethnic representation.
01:57.8
Her ability to connect with diverse groups of people
02:01.2
is seen to have played a crucial role in her campaign.
02:04.6
It also convinced her to throw her hat into the political ring.
02:08.5
It was thrown back at me that I've been trying to get people to run for representation.
02:13.1
And then somebody threw it back at me and said,
02:15.1
yeah, but you're not running.
02:16.6
How can you ask other people to do it when you're not doing it?
02:19.3
So I said, okay, let's give it a try. Let's give it a whirl.
02:22.7
As Waters takes her place in the city council,
02:25.1
she brings with her a fresh perspective
02:27.8
and a commitment to inclusivity.
02:29.8
For fellow Phil Amps,
02:31.8
her story is a powerful reminder that no matter where one comes from,
02:35.8
with hard work and determination,
02:37.8
anything is possible.
02:39.8
I'm happy for her and the difference she's going to make for the community.
02:41.8
And I just know that she's always been a people pleaser
02:45.8
and really looks out for the people that she's around.
02:47.8
And I can't wait to see what she does in the next couple of years.
02:49.8
She is our pride.
02:51.8
She is our voice.
02:53.8
And I know she's going to go on a higher height,
02:55.8
being a councilwoman.
02:57.8
We look forward to higher and lifting up the bar
03:01.8
for the Filipino community.
03:03.8
Waters also hopes to pave the way for future generations of Phil Amps
03:07.8
and other minorities in public service.
03:10.8
We need to be able to create something, a PAC or an organization
03:14.8
wherein we support any Filipino who will run,
03:17.8
regardless of what party, regardless of where.
03:19.8
If you're going to run in your Filipino, you deserve our support.
03:21.8
With unwavering spirit and dedication,
03:24.8
Waters is seen as not only making history,
03:26.8
but also shaping the future of Carleton, Texas.
